“We didn't even have a paper clip to our name.”
If you ever had the privilege of hearing Dwight and Debra Whitworth tell the story of how all of this began, chances are those were the very first words you heard. Every single time they shared the story, that's where it started. It wasn't simply a favorite saying. It was a reminder.
A reminder that Dwight Whitworth & Company wasn't built on resources, influence, or a business plan. It began with two people who simply listened to God, trusted His direction, and took a step of faith. Looking back today, it's incredible to see what God built from those humble beginnings. But before there was a national ministry… before there was a team of consultants… before churches across the country knew the name Dwight Whitworth & Company… there was simply Dwight and Debra Whitworth saying “yes” to God's calling.
That was the beginning of what would eventually become Dwight Whitworth & Company.
God had placed a vision in Dwight's heart because he recognized something that had quietly begun to happen throughout the Church world. Churches and exceptional ministry candidates were no longer connecting the way they once had. Something had changed, and the gap between churches searching for the right leader and candidates searching for the right place to serve continued to grow.
Rather than simply recognizing the problem, God planted a vision. Dwight believed God was calling him to transition from full-time ministry and build a bridge—a connecting point, if you will—that would forever change the way churches and ministry leaders found one another. It wasn't about creating another staffing company. It was about creating a ministry that would prayerfully and intentionally pair churches with the people God had already prepared for them.
From the very beginning, Dwight carried one simple but unwavering passion:
“To impact the local church in a positive and major way.”
That wasn't a slogan. It was the heartbeat behind everything DWC would become.
Although staffing would become the first way the organization served churches across the country, Dwight never envisioned DWC as merely a staffing organization. The vision was always much larger than that. Staffing was simply the first expression of a ministry that God would continue to grow in many different ways.
There was one thing you learned very quickly around Dwight. Never call DWC “headhunters.” And never refer to it as “staff stealers.” Those were phrases Dwight never wanted associated with the organization because that was never the mission. He wasn't interested in building another HR staffing firm filled with people who had never served in ministry but wanted to advise churches on decisions they had never personally lived or experienced.
DWC would always be a ministry first. It would be led by men and women who had personally been called into ministry and who understood firsthand the joys, challenges, victories, disappointments, and responsibilities that came with serving the local church.
Dwight envisioned something completely different. He dreamed of surrounding churches with experienced ministry leaders—Lead Pastors, Executive Pastors, Worship Pastors, Youth Pastors, Children's Pastors, A/V leaders, university professors, seminary leaders, and others whose lives had been devoted to ministry.
As God continued to grow the organization, that vision became reality. At one point, one of Dwight's trusted advisors had even served alongside Billy Graham himself.
Why? Because Dwight believed no one could better recognize God's fit for a church than someone who had experienced both sides of ministry. Someone who had served on a church staff. Someone who had been the candidate. Someone who understood both perspectives. Experience on both sides of the coin. That, in Dwight's mind, was one of the things that would forever separate DWC from everyone else.
Dwight often said, “It's like comparing apples with oranges.” The organization would simply be different. But before any of that could happen, God established what would become the true foundation of Dwight Whitworth & Company. Prayer. Not as something the organization did. But who the organization was. An intercessory prayer team was established to pray every single day, faithfully calling out by name the organization itself, every consultant, every executive leader, every church, every Lead Pastor, every staff member, and every candidate entrusted to DWC. Prayer wasn't added to the plan. Prayer was the foundation of the plan.
Scripture also became woven into the very fabric of the organization. One passage in particular became foundational to how Dwight viewed ministry and church staffing: “…fitly joined together…” — Ephesians 4:16. That verse became the biblical basis behind pairing churches and candidates—not simply filling positions, but prayerfully bringing together the people God had already designed to serve alongside one another. It was also during this foundational time that another defining part of DWC was born from that very verse. The “Gears” concept.
Like everything else that would define Dwight Whitworth & Company, it wasn't created as a marketing idea. It grew naturally out of the vision God had placed in Dwight's heart and became another reminder that every person, every church, every candidate, and every part of the ministry worked together as God intended.
One of the greatest advantages God gave Dwight was something very few people could ever claim. Throughout his years in full-time ministry, he had personally served in every pastoral role within the local church. That meant he wasn't speaking from theory or secondhand knowledge. He had lived it. Whether it was being a Lead Pastor, Executive, Worship/Music, Youth, Kids, etc. He had done it. He understood firsthand the unique responsibilities, challenges, victories, and perspectives that came with each position because he had experienced them himself.
It was because of that extraordinary background that Debra affectionately gave him a nickname that would stick for years. “The Unicorn.” Why? Because there simply wasn't another person who could draw from real-life ministry experience across every area of church leadership the way Dwight could. He had stood in those shoes. He had carried those responsibilities. He had seen ministry from every angle.
Looking back now, we believe that was one of the many ways God uniquely prepared Dwight for the calling He had placed on his life. God didn't simply give him a vision for an organization—He had spent decades preparing him to lead it. Then came what was often referred to as the “secret sauce.” Every vision needed a plan. And that plan became known as The Process.
Other than prayer, nothing was more important to Dwight than The Process. No one, and I mean no one, has ever deviated from The Process. It wasn't simply a checklist or a system. It was a God-given framework for serving churches with excellence and consistency. It was designed to work regardless of the position being filled, the size of the church, the location, the denomination—or whether the church was non-denominational. No matter who the consultant was… No matter which church we were serving… No matter where that church was located… The Process never changed. It became the standard then, and it remains the standard today.
Another conviction Dwight carried was that churches shouldn't have to endure months of uncertainty while searching for staff. He understood the urgency created whenever a position became vacant. Every week without the right leader affected the church, the staff, and the congregation. Through prayer, through The Process, and through complete dependence on God's leading, Dwight believed there was no reason churches had to wait months for God to move. He believed that, with God's help, it could happen in a few short weeks.
That conviction became another defining characteristic of Dwight Whitworth & Company. From the very beginning, DWC committed itself to helping churches move through the search process efficiently, intentionally, and prayerfully—often seeing positions filled within just a handful of weeks rather than many months. Dwight was the kind of person who you knew never dreamed small. He never approached anything halfway. God continually placed visions in his heart that often seemed far bigger than what others thought could ever be accomplished. Yet, time after time, God faithfully proved that what He calls people to do, He also equips them to accomplish.
Although staffing churches became the first expression of DWC's ministry, Dwight never intended for it to be the last. His vision continued to grow. He dreamed of a counseling division specifically designed for pastors and ministry staff—a place where those serving others could finally have someone to encourage and counsel them. In a world where ministry leaders often carry enormous burdens in silence, Dwight wanted them to know they would always have a place to turn. His vision didn't stop there. He envisioned church conferences on both the East Coast and the West Coast, where ministry leaders from every position could gather to learn, grow, encourage one another, and become better equipped for the calling God had placed on their lives. He saw opportunities through live events, podcasts, social media, and countless other avenues to continue strengthening the local church.
Simply put… He wanted to impact the Church in every way God allowed. As remarkable as Dwight's vision was, many people never fully understood the equally important foundation that Debra brought to Dwight Whitworth & Company from the very beginning. Debra never sought the spotlight. She was never interested in being the one standing out front. But make no mistake… This was never a one-person vision. It was a leadership partnership built by both Dwight and Debra.
If Dwight was “The Unicorn,” then Debra just might have been “The Wizard of Oz.”
Not because she stayed hidden… But because she was the steady hand behind so much of what kept the organization moving forward every single day. God had gifted Dwight and Debra in different ways, and together those gifts complemented one another perfectly.
Long before DWC ever existed, Debra had faithfully served alongside Dwight throughout their years in ministry. At the same time, she had built an impressive professional background working with some of the top law firms in America. That experience became invaluable as DWC grew, allowing her to oversee many of the legal documents, agreements, and countless operational details that most people never saw. Looking back, it's easy to see how God had been preparing both of them long before Dwight Whitworth & Company was ever founded.
The ministry experience. The professional experience. The leadership. The vision. The organization. Every season of their lives became another piece of what God would eventually bring together to build Dwight Whitworth & Company. As the years passed, God continued to bless Dwight Whitworth & Company in ways that Dwight and Debra could have never imagined. The organization continued to grow, not only in size, but in influence. God surrounded DWC with an incredible network of ministry partners, lifelong friendships, consultants, advisors, executive leaders, pastors, and countless others who believed in the vision and desired to be part of what God was building. What had once begun with two people faithfully following God's calling was now reaching churches all across the country.
Before long, that reach would extend even farther. DWC would celebrate its first international pairing with a church in Hong Kong, a reminder that God's vision had become far greater than anything Dwight or Debra could have imagined in those early days. As the ministry continued to expand, God began preparing the next chapter. Initially, Dwight wasn't looking for someone to replace him. He was simply looking to strengthen the organization by adding another experienced ministry leader who could help carry the increasing responsibility that came with the growth God was bringing.
That person would become his son. At the time, Matt was still serving in full-time music ministry as a Worship Pastor. Having followed in his father's footsteps, he too had sensed God's calling at a young age and had spent years serving churches of every size—from smaller congregations to some of the larger churches in the country. Dwight invited Matt to prayerfully consider joining DWC with one purpose in mind. Learn everything. The plan was never for Matt to simply fill one role within the organization. Dwight intentionally began training him in every aspect of the ministry, allowing him to grow, learn, and understand every part of the vision God had given him years earlier.
The long-term plan was simple. Someday… Many years down the road… When the time was right… Matt would carry the vision forward. As time passed, Matt naturally became the right-hand man to both Dwight and Debra, learning not only how the organization operated, but more importantly, why it existed.
Then… The story changed.
Like every great story, some moments simply don't make sense while you're living them. Moments when questions seem louder than answers. Moments when the only thing left to do is trust God above your own understanding, your own emotions, and your own expectations. For Dwight, for Matt, and for everyone who loved DWC… This became one of those moments. God decided that Debra's race here on earth was complete.
Some moments in life forever divide the story into “before” and “after.” This was one of them.
To many, it appeared as though this might become the beginning of the end of Dwight Whitworth & Company. But Dwight never believed that. He knew this ministry had become far greater than even its founders. As Matt and Dwight encouraged each other with during that time was a simple statement. “We've come too far to only come this far.” God may have chosen Dwight and Debra to begin the vision, but Dwight never believed God intended for that vision to end with them.
As difficult as that season was—and without question the hardest season of Dwight's life—he and Matt stood back-to-back and continued moving forward together, determined to faithfully carry the vision God had entrusted to DWC years before.
Looking back now, it became clear why God had impressed upon Dwight's heart to bring Matt into the organization when He did. God had already been preparing the next chapter long before anyone realized it. It was during this season that Dwight often shared a lesson that only difficult seasons can teach. “You truly find out who is with you for the long haul… and who are just the riders.” Those words weren't spoken from bitterness. They were spoken from experience. And through it all… God remained faithful. His hand continued to rest upon Dwight Whitworth & Company. The organization continued to grow. Churches continued to be served. Lives continued to be changed. And the vision continued moving forward exactly as God intended.
For that, DWC remained grateful every single day. But for those who truly knew Dwight… There was something different. Something missing. Dwight had never been a man who was built to walk through life alone. He loved being surrounded by family. He loved friendships. He loved his colleagues. He loved serving alongside people. He simply loved people. But, for the first time in his life… He experienced what it meant to be alone. And as the curtain quietly closed on one chapter of the story… God was already preparing the next.
As only God can do, He already knew exactly what Dwight needed long before Dwight himself ever realized it. Knowing Dwight better than anyone on earth, God saw the loneliness that had entered his life and, in His perfect timing, brought Kathy into the story.
She would eventually become not only Dwight's wife but once again the helpmate God knew he needed. It wasn't simply their relationship that made their story so remarkable. It was how perfectly God had already been preparing Kathy for a role she never imagined she would one day fill. Neither Dwight nor Kathy could have predicted where life would eventually lead them. Yet as they watched God's plan unfold, it became unmistakably clear that His hand had been orchestrating every step long before either of them understood it.
And because God has a wonderful sense of humor… One of Dwight's favorite parts of telling this story was reminding people that Kathy had previously served as the COO of one of DWC's competing organizations. Only God could write a story like that. Kathy's years of ministry leadership, coupled with her nationally recognized experience in church staffing, became another incredible example of God's provision.
What initially appeared to be an unexpected chapter quickly proved to be a seamless transition. A true “plug-and-play” fit.
Kathy brought her own unique gifts, leadership, wisdom, and experience to the organization, and together, Dwight, Kathy, and Matt formed what Dwight often jokingly referred to as a “three-headed monster.” There was a renewed excitement. A renewed energy. A renewed momentum. Once again, it was evident that God was continuing to build what He had started years before.
Then… Without warning… The story changed once again.
In 2025, what seemed impossible suddenly became reality. It felt as though time itself stood still. God had decided that Dwight's work here was complete. His race had been run. It was time to bring him Home. The backbone… The powerhouse… The visionary… The leader… The spiritual warrior… The man through whom God had chosen to begin Dwight Whitworth & Company… Was now standing in the presence of the very Savior he had faithfully served.
For those who loved Dwight. For those who served beside him… For those whose lives had been changed because of his obedience… The loss was almost impossible to put into words.
But even in that moment… The vision didn't end. Years before, God had already been preparing for this chapter. The mantle that Dwight had faithfully carried was now passed to Matt in a single moment. Not to create a new vision. Not to build a different organization.
But to faithfully continue the vision that God had first entrusted to Dwight and Debra so many years before.
Alongside Kathy's leadership, experience, wisdom, and unwavering support, they committed themselves to doing the only thing they knew how to do. Continue the mission. For Matt, it became the most difficult journey he had ever walked. There were days filled with grief. Days filled with questions. Days filled with enormous responsibility. Yet through it all, one truth never changed.
The God who began this story was still writing it.
The Name Change
And that brings us to today. Today… A new scene opens. Not a new story. Not a new script. Not even a new production. Simply… A new scene. It's still the same book. The same story. The same musical. The same vision. The same foundation. The same unwavering commitment to prayer. The same Process. The same “built different” work ethic.
The same passion to be the tip of the spear. The same desire to impact the local church in a positive and major way. The only thing that has changed… Is the name.
What began years ago as Dwight Whitworth & Company now enters its next scene. Led by Dwight's son, Matt Whitworth… The ministry moves forward under a new name.

The vision continues. The mission continues. The story continues. Because this was never simply Dwight's story. It has always been God's story. Written through the lives of Dwight and Debra Whitworth. And if you knew Dwight…
If you truly knew him… I have a feeling that after looking back over every chapter, every victory, every obstacle, every unexpected turn, and every reminder of God's faithfulness… He'd probably lean back with that familiar smile and simply say…
“I love it when a plan comes together.”
